Program Overview

One Hen empowers students to become social entrepreneurs who make a difference for themselves and the world.

One Hen provides educators with flexible curriculum resources to inspire kids to four values: financial responsibility, personal initiative, global awareness, and giving back. Via a series of interactive lesson plans, an engaging storybook, and a website of games and activities, One Hen challenges young people (grades K-8) to start their own small businesses. In the process, the youth entrepreneurs are equipped with the necessary skills in business math, personal financial literacy, and social entrepreneurship.

One Hen in the classroom

At the core of each One Hen Academy program is the story, One Hen: How a Small Loan Made a Big Difference. Inspired by Kojo, the book's main character, and equipped with the skills they need, students work as teams to face the challenges of running their own real-world small businesses. With the profits they earn, they repay their loans and make a donation to a non-profit organization of their choice, helping to meet a local or global need.

"I am a firm believer in the One Hen Academy. The real world impact it has on the students is something they will always remember." -3rd grade civics teacher

One Hen in the community

In partnership with educational organizations such as BELL, Citizen Schools and National Heritage Academies, among others, One Hen has found great success implementing its One Hen Academy (OHA) curriculum. Children in both school and afterschool settings are exposed to real social issues and construct creative solutions, broadening their mindsets to tie together business with philanthropy. Since the organization's inception, over 5,000 students have participated in OHA.

"The website is easy to use and the activities can be adapted for any age group." - 4th grade ELA teacher

One Hen on the web offers free resources and lesson plans to educators who seek to teach their students lessons in social entrepreneurship, business basics, and global citizenship. The site has over 25,000 unique visitors annually.

To date, these programs and resources have reached over 32,000 children in 100+ countries and across the United States, inspiring students to make a difference in the world!
