One Hen is Boston Scores’ flagship service-learning program. Boston Scores partners with the Boston Public School teachers, our coach-mentors, to provide urban youth in grades K-12 with after-school soccer & enrichment programs. Students typically participate 5 days per week, including 2 days of girls & boys soccer practices, 2 days of enrichment classes (poetry or civic leadership) & a soccer game day in which teams are transported to play other BPS schools.
Elementary students engage in One Hen lessons that focus on research, community outreach, activism, and reflection. Through this program, students use writing as a tool to affect positive change for themselves and others. Service projects motivate students to consider their relationship to social issues such as poverty, access to healthcare & education, disaster relief, and climate change.
As students progress towards high school graduation, they transition to our middle school service-learning program. Through this program, One Hen guides students through the basics of starting a micro-business. Students learn about loans, marketing, product development, and the important role businesses have in the community. Students then donate the profits from their businesses to address an identified social issue.
When students enter high school, our enrichment programs add in college & job readiness workshops.
One Hen is offered year-round to local schools and globally via our online education platform. One Hen also provides training services, program oversight, evaluation and support for a fee. To learn more about these opportunities, please contact us.
